EPISODE 2: Bathhouse Blitz! Save the Black Cat and the Golden Butterfly!
May 25 - May 31
TIMELINE
5/25-5/29 Dowsing Machines
5/27 Art Contest
5/28 Investigate: Bathhouse
5/30 Mystery Plot
5/31 Showdown: Vaporpilia & Rescue: Niangniang
The race to find Niangniang has begun! Nautis has given everyone dowsing machines that look like little toys to track Niangniang via magic leak. They beep with increasing frequency when in proximity of the source, which means they're not exactly discreet, but they're the only way the Nova Knights themselves can track Niangniang. Just try to make sure it doesn't get taken away in class! Those who attend Everwave Academy may notice that it beeps a lot at the school, but...there are no cats to be found on campus.
Everwave Academy sends a memo to all faculty, staff, and students' families that the school guidance counselor Optimus Prime has resigned in order to "pursue other professional opportunities", leaving the position temporarily unfilled until they hire another counselor.
On the 27th, final scores from Shelley Lustre's art contest are announced. Maya's little cousin Pearl won first place and Kalim secured third place. Natalia's submission, however, was disqualified.
Even though the Nova Knights' investigation efforts aren't entirely successful, on the 31st, Nautis alerts the whole team with the near-certain knowledge that Niangniang is at the Golden Butterfly and is at risk of being captured by the enemy, and that they've all got to get there quick!
> SOS! SOS! Alert! Alert! We've got a situation!
> I've got a fix on Niangniang's location, but it looks like the enemy does too!
> All Nova Knights, report for action! I'm sending you coordinates now.
> JK, it's the Golden Butterfly Bathhouse ^_^
> The enemy is sure to be sending their strongest monsters to capture our mascot, so be on your guard!
> Normally I'd be kind of OK with letting the enemy get their hands on her, but we kind of need her. Β―\_(γ)_/Β― Oh well!
> Which means you all need to get your magical keisters in gear. Duty calls! Time to go supernova!
While Mutsumi arrives a little too late to help, Jamil, Kalim, and Natalia make it to the bathhouse in time to defeat the bathhouse butterfly monster Vaporpilia and save a very drenched black cat. Once the action is over and the steam clears, Niangniang the cat unexpectedly poofs into human form. Niangniang was reincarnated as a human like the rest of them, and her true identity is...Maomao?!
Neither Hope nor Maya made it to the bathhouse, however, nor did they respond to Nautis's messages. Once they've ensured Niangniang's (Maomao's) safety, Nautis tries once again to contact the two Nova Knights who never made it to the battle, only to discover that they're nowhere to be located in Chalra City. Nautis realizes too late that Maya and Hope must have been trapped in the Abyss by the enemy. The situation isn't hopeless, however β unlike Nova Zenith's case, she can still track their magical signatures, even if only faintly, which means they can be saved.
The full mission results can be found here.

Thank god, really. Imagine the embarrassment of talking to a normal cat like they're a human in public. "As for what we want, we want to get you out of this bath-house, eliminate these monsters hurting people, and maybe to talk to a friend of ours, in that order."
bona fides thus established, she casually back-hands a few more caterpillars in one unholy glowing spinning fist. "But. I am, as they say, flexible."

She kind of wishes she hadn't talked at all. Maybe then she could have escaped this whole mess and, uh, figured it out on her own?? She wants off this ride. The caterpillar staggers back a few splashing steps, then lurches forward to shoot a blast of hot water at Maomao and Nova Sunbeam. And then something weird happens.
Just as she's thinking I want out of here!, that beam of golden light emerges from her forehead again, and this time, it takes the form of a domed shield in front of her and Kalim just in time to block the hot water attack.
At the same time, Kalim and Natalia both receive texts even though they are most definitely not looking at their cell phones right now: DATA PROTECTION CONTINGENCY ACTIVATED.

She ducks down and picks both of them up, Nova Sunbeam, Niangniang, and all, in a fireman's carry, and heads for an exit, careful to use her back to push open the bar and turn so Sunbeam is feet first coming through the door.
She has to bend out of the way of yet another attack, but stands atop the emergency door for half a second before hopping off and kicking it shut hard on the ascending waterpillars, dissipating a few and slowing down the rest.
She sets off towards the arcade, completely unheeding of the fact that she is still carrying Sunbeam and Niangniang. Like a bunch of grapes or something.

It isn't until they're in the street outside that he realises this is no longer necessary.
"Oh, hey! Nova Neos, you, uh, you can put me down now...?"
He's still holding onto Niangniang, though.

She does not yet know about Glimmer and Pandora. These words will sink into her neck like ice later. "I am getting all of us to safety."
Wait. She stops. "... Also. Sunbeam. Stop using fuckweed."
no subject
"What's... fuckweed?"

Boarding the Nashira without further incident, she calls out, "Nautis. Vaporpilia is neutralized and-- it may have helped had you told me Niangniang was a whole person, instead of emphasizing the cat portion of her description."

The bedraggled cat finally manages to escape Sunbeam's grasp, alighting on the floor with a wobble before she transforms with a poof of smoke...back to regular human Maomao, who is still half-soaked and wrapped in her towel from the bath. She looks up at Neos and Sunbeam with a look that suggests that if she could kill herself here and now with the press of a button, she would be slamming it repeatedly.
"Oh, gross," comments Nautis.

"Whoah, wait! Don't you go to β uh, I mean... wow, that's crazy you were a person this whole time...?"
Struggling to recalibrate from the combination of shock that Niangniang is a person, shock that the person Niangniang is is someone he recognises, and the effort of trying not to inadvertently reveal his secret identity, Sunbeam instead just holds out the bag of cat treats.

For now, she's choosing not to engage with the whole "turned into a cat" thing. Better to focus on the facts in front of her. What facts she's sure of, anyway. For one: these people are strangers and dressed up incredibly gaudily. And she has no idea where it is she's been taken, nor where the exits are. Something very bizarre definitely happened at the bathhouse, and she's still not one hundred percent sure what it was. But she knows one thing: magic isn't real, so whatever things they saw attacking them in the bath? Not real either. There was chaos in the baths and the air was thick with steam, so everything weird she saw? Just a weird trick of the light, or her panicking mind trying badly to fill in some blanks. This makes Maomao feel substantially calmer.
This asshole keeps offering her cat treats, though. She responds with a glare.
She doesn't really understand what these people want from her. They claimed that they needed her help, but at the same time...they apparently had no idea who she was until just now? (Still not examining the "turned into a cat" part.) If they needed any kind of help she can actually offer, they'd have been better off looking for her father. She's just a student; she's nothing, so in any case, she's pretty sure these two have made a mistake in picking her up.
Maomao sighs, and when she finally speaks, it's not with any kind of panic, but with a weary resignation.
"If you're holding me for some kind of ransom, I'm afraid you'll be disappointed. My life's not worth that much in cash. I'm pretty sure you've got the wrong person, in any case."

This whole thing might be sufficiently advanced technology-- see yon talking computer-- but magic? she was sure there was an instruction manual for this somewhere, dammit, and as soon as she found it...
"... One last thing. I should go retrieve her clothes." She looks Sunbeam dead in the eyes. "At least treat her like she's a human, Sunbeam."
She's trying to hide it, but the pain and weakness from taking on so many missions over the last few weeks really is telling on her. She has to take it slow as she heads back out of the Nashira to retrieve Maomao's things.
no subject
He starts after her, sounding concerned.
"You just had two fights in a row, you should rest up before you take care of anything else! And I don't think any of us should go back in there just yet..."
A pause.
"Hold on. Where's Nova Crescent?"
no subject
It means she has to stay in Supernova and collect her clothes later, but if it gets every other ball rolling, she'll live with it.
no subject
She is not wearing that girl's bike shorts, though.
"Oh, no need to bother! I'll just send a message to Nova Crescent," Nautis says cheerfully. "I think it's more important that you two make sure our new comrade is comfortably situated."
Somehow, she makes the word comrade sound like a slur despite her otherwise pleasant tone. Maomao stares at the massive console taking up one wall, and then looks back up at Neos and Sunbeam. These people are all clearly insane, and someone is definitely talking through that computer. Maomao fully resigns herself to the conclusion that 1) despite their claims otherwise, these people have definitely kidnapped her, and 2) they've got the wrong person.
"I'm sure suddenly having a human body must be disorienting for you, but don't worry!" chirps Nautis. "I've verified that your soul has in fact been reincarnated into that body, even though you were just an itty-bitty misbehaving cat! I bet you're nine times as annoying now, hee hee!"
Not only is this kidnapping, she's being tortured. She does, at least, take the towel from Neos even though she's choosing not to examine where it came from.
no subject
"Aw, no way, I bet she's a really nice person!" he says cheerfully as the conversation turns to their itty bitty misbehaving cat. "I mean! Not that I'd know or anything, because I've never met her before, but she seems nice!"
no subject
Regardless, she can't escape the sickening feeling in her heart, a feeling like she's about to sink into the floor of the Nashira. "What about the others?"
