Jamil, his focus completely behind them, sees the audience's reaction first--delight, mostly, the assumption apparently that this is some new gimmick effect for the rerelease--and then Kalim grabs his arm at the same time Jamil's phone charm pulses with recognition. With mounting dread, Jamil turns in his seat to witness Not Meryl Streep's giant talon slowly begin to emerge from the movie screen into real space.
"It must be some new 3D technology," his mouth says stupidly, grasping for whatever explanation might keep Kalim calm in the moment.
Of course. Of course he'd miscalculated the danger entirely. And now Jamil is stuck out in the open, unable to transform in front of this many people--in front of Kalim, which is completely out of the question. Time seems to slow as the movie-monster's gnarled hand descends on them further and Jamil's brain grinds to a halt with indecision. In the absence of any instructions from its decision-making center, Jamil's body moves on instinct instead--he grabs Kalim's arm, yanks him out of his seat, and bodily shoves him away from the monster and toward the exit.
